Drawing is often revered as an innate talent that you are either born with or aren't Although artistically gifted individual will have an easier time when it comes to drawing than average person, drawing is a skill that you can acquire, With sound fundamentals, techniques and practice, you can learn to draw something that will boast your creative and artistic facet of you.

When an artist draws something, he/she will first mentally break down the subject into many smaller parts, basic shapes. Then the artist will translate those basic shapes onto the canvas to use as a guideline for drawing. Basic shapes are nothing more than simple geometric shapes such as oblong, oval, triangle and square. Drawing is something that isn't done in one take. There are multiple stages and steps along the way. Constant revisions prevail and complete start over is necessary at times.

Next time you observe an object, try to visualize what shape or combinations of basic shapes you can make out. For instance, an orange will almost always take a shape of a circle. A pineapple has a basic shape of an oval. A flower will most likely have combinations of triangles, circles and oblongs. Breaking the subject you are drawing down into basic shapes will not only simplify the process of drawing but also act as a framework that will keep everything in proportions.

When you learn to draw, start by drawing simple lines and basic shapes such as circles, different shapes of boxes, ovals, and so on. This may appear tedious and for the most part, they can be. However, practicing drawing these simple shapes will set strong foundations for you as you learn to draw. You will discover that your lines will seem crooked and circles look more like spheres than anything. Don't worry, after enough practice and repetition, you will start drawing perfectly straight lines and symmetrical circles.

If you get bored drawing all the basic shapes, you can try to keep it interesting by using this exercise. It's a form of tracing but not really. Pick a bunch of photographs of different objects, whether they are a bike, car, or a tiger. Place a thin piece of paper over the photographs and start mapping basic shapes out of them. This will help you familiarize yourself with the process of forming basic shapes out of your models.

It really doesn't take an artistic genius to learn to draw. With enough practice and repetition of drawing simple lines and shapes, you wil set an excellent foundations and basic skills necessary for drawing.

Quick Tip #1: Breaking It Down

Break the subject you are drawing into simple basic shapes such as square, oval, oblong, triangle, and circle. It doesn't matter whether you are drawing an apple or a dragon. If you break your model down into basic shapes and use them as an outline, you are greatly simplifying the process of drawing.


Quick Tip #2: Outside In

Draw from outside in. What I mean by this is you should always draw the outlines of your models first then cramp all the details within those outlines. Drawing facial features such as eyes, nose and mouth before setting facial line is a huge no-no.


Quick Tip #3: Upside-Down

One exercise that will improve your drawing skills is drawing an upside-down image. This may seem a bit weird at first but try it! It'll develop and improve your visual mode.
